Attempted Assassination shocks America

Security around Diego tightened as rogue secret service man is on the loose

??? in Washington

America’s election race took an unexpected turn yesterday as an attempt was made on the life of Democratic Candidate Harold Diego, as he drove through the streets of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A single shot was fired as Mr Diego passed through the main business district in his open-topped car, causing the passengers to dive to the floor of the vehicle. One passenger was seen to throw himself on top of Mr Diego before the driver accelerated away.

The assassin’s round exploded into the curb, spraying onlookers with debris. Secret Service agents quickly identified a nearby warehouse as the likely vantage point and stormed the building, but no gunman was found. The rifle, A German-made H&K PSG1 was found loaded near a dead body and a window.

The body was officially identified by crime scene investigators as that of 27-year-old Stuart Reed, a worker at the Temple Street warehouse. Mr Reed is not, however, considered a suspect as his wounds indicate that an unknown assailant with a pistol killed him.

The main suspect has been identified as Marc Kaufax; a 31-year-old secret agent seen leaving the warehouse in his car, after the attempt on Diego’s life had been made. John Forester, Kaufax’s employer and ironically head of the investigation into yesterdays attempt, is treating Kaufax’s presence and subsequent failure to report back as extremely suspicious.

Kaufax was already under internal investigation prior to yesterday’s assassination attempt, after the death of Mr Forester’s predecessor Jack Baker, found dead in his luxury home one year ago. The investigation had found insufficient evidence to name Kaufax as the murderer, although his presence in the vicinity of Mr Baker’s house on the night of his death had made his involvement a possibility.

A source within the agency claimed that Kaufax had a reputation as a "loose cannon". Forester promised that they were tracking him "and should have him apprehended within the week".

Meanwhile, life goes on for Harold Diego. Although understandably shaken by yesterday’s events, he has opted to resume his schedule and attend a press conference this evening. Asked if the attempt on his life had affected him at all, he confidently joked, "it was good practice for when I get into the white house". Indeed, opinion polls suggest that the events of yesterday and his reaction to them have strengthened an already successful campaign.

The ex-military man was visiting the northern state to ensure a victory in a state that has been notoriously neutral in recent years. The exact motive behind the assassination has not been established. Meanwhile, The President expressed his shock at the day’s events, and once again backed the man he hopes to be his successor, commending him on the way in which he handled the situation, adding, "This is the kind of man our good country needs".
